Homelessness and Black and Minoritised Ethnic Communities

The Homelessness and Black and Minoritised Ethnic Communities in the UK – Knowledge and Capacity Building Programme is a major initiative supported by , designed to address racial inequalities in homelessness. The programme combines robust statistical analysis with qualitative research to offer a comprehensive understanding of how homelessness disproportionately affects Black and minoritised ethnic groups.

Key outputs include the  which found that Black people in the UK are three times more likely to experience homelessness. In 2024, a deep dive study, produced in collaboration with the , explored ethnic group-specific challenges in accessing housing and support. The programme also highlights research by emerging scholars, including work on Roma homelessness and young Black people's experiences of homelessness.

The programme continues to evolve, with future research planned on racial inequalities in homelessness, particularly through region-specific studies such as the West Midlands, and further focus on complex needs and housing.

By uniting experts across fields such as social policy, law, and public health, I-SPHERE creates impactful research that addresses the root causes of disadvantage.
